"ALCATRAZ"---IT ONLY SEMI-SUCKS

I've just finished watching the entire run of the mid-season replacement called Alcatraz on Fox.  I committed to watching this even though JJ Abrams was involved since I was soooo over how Lost ended--I mean seriously we all thought they were in some kind of purgatory from the get go and even after producers assured us they weren't--turns out THEY WERE!!  Ugh...but still it seemed an interesting premise and some of it was actually shot in San Francisco, but the rest was in Vancouver, and sadly you can really tell the difference--still I watched them all.

Now here are some of the things I was mostly okay with---the crime of the week thing, it's fine, makes it more palatable to folks and gives the show some consistency.  The addition of Hurley, sorry, Jorge Garcia as a geeky comic book store owner with a gigantic--IQ.  He gives it a comedic Comic-Con vibe to draw in that faction.  As does Sam Neill, I mean Jurassic Park, yeah.  Parminder Nagra is a plus, where has she been since ER?  It's got time travel--or something like it.  And of course the most important thing that any new show needs---kind of hot criminal guys--see here, and here and here.  It's kind of like Fringe-lite. You'd think in the grand scheme of things this would be enough, but there is just something missing......

The things that are off kind of go like this---we were promised a show with a mythology that would be revealed each week and yet, they really haven't done this, which is too bad, I mean didn't the Lost folks learn their lesson?  You have to give more information than you've been doing.  People showing up and they don't know how or remember, silver in their blood, it's her grandfather, they have tracking devices and so on.  Problem is they don't make sense and aren't really telling us anything.  All we get are a lot of questions and few answers.  It's frustrating and probably one of the reasons people are tuning out leaving this show on the bubble as to whether it will be renewed or not.  As of this writing still no word.  The only thing they have going for them is that Fox doesn't have a lot of other options and that may be it's saving grace---barely.  Actually, this lack of any forthcoming information is really the major thing that bugs me about this show.  I really want to like it but I've been burned by so many shows in the past who promise one thing and then deliver nothing---see Lost, X-Files, Heroes---some of the worst offenders.  It's bad enough to make me look past the sometimes slow paced writing.

This is not to say the show can't be saved should it be renewed.  It can, but dudes you gotta give us something besides silver blood and random characters from the past popping up and not remembering how they got there.  I mean COME ON!!  Somebody has to remember something?!  Right?  You need to give us more than drips and dribbles--which probably means you need to think ahead and at least pretend you will have a second or third season.  I think the ratings have shown people won't put up with it and please don't give me that "they watch on DVR crap."

In summation I feel like I'm making just a simple request--pick up the pace and give us more of the mythology you promised.  I'm making an effort to stick with your show I only hope you can make the effort to keep me interested enough to still watch.
